Choosing a Data Recovery Company
There are many different factors to consider
when choosing a data recovery company. Often companies have strong skills in
some areas, but are less efficient in others.
Many recovery companies offer an emergency
recovery service - if your data is important and you need it back online as soon
as possible, these would be the obvious choice.
You may also wish to consider on-site data
recovery. Engineers from your chosen company will visit your premises at a time
to suit you, and attempt to recover data from your damaged disks or media
on-site. This may be useful if your project is urgent, or if your corporate
policy doesn't allow sensitive data to leave the building.
If this is your first time choosing a recovery
company, you may want to read as much information as possible regarding them. Do
they have specialist engineers specifically devoted to data recovery? Have they
had previous experience with your media? What is their normal success rate?
These are all questions you should have answers to before making a decision. See
if you can find any other previous clients of the company you are considering,
or even staff in your own company that have dealt with them before.
Once you have decided on a company, you should
telephone them and ask a few questions. They too will have questions to ask you
about your media, data loss and how it might have occured. Remember at this
stage that the more information you give them the more likely they will be able
to help you.
Make sure you don't tamper with the damaged
disk(s) or media before telephoning the recovery company. If you already have,
tell them - they will best advise on how to solve the problem. They should also
be able to tell you how best to remove the drive/media, and ship it to their
labs.
